When we are looking for a result to bring us happiness, or that there’s something we should be doing or have to be accomplishing, it’s an automatic joy-sucker. We really seem to want to have others confirm that our suffering is contributing to a better life – but it’s really just suffering.
Finding moments of flow and being in tune with the moment can help a lot, and it might just be what makes a good life for any individual. Even though we all find our most in-tune moments through different activities, that experience is universal and positive.
When we can create meaning in our lives and do more of that, I believe we are living well. But we also shouldn’t judge ourselves for how often we can’t live up to our ideals. We don’t actually need to be “on” constantly in order to have a purposeful and great life. It is enough to exist and be who we are. And it’s even better when we can recognize how much good and kindness we cause just by living our life and being who we are.
What if existing and being in the same way as a cherished pet cat or dog is good enough, and we don’t have to do anything to prove we are good and worthy of life? If that is true, then we are so free to relax and enjoy ourselves, and share that joy and acceptance with others.
